The Best of...

I wish I'd taken more pictures of all the stupid and fun stuff we did as undergrads. Here's a sampling of some stuff I found.

Memories are the dividend paid on an investment of time.

People

The H.O.G. (High-Octane Grill or Humongous Obtuse Grill) - What do four growing young men who live together do for fun? They build huge grill that's shaped like a pig and feeds an army. (Although the curly tail is visible on the right, the nose and ears are not.) Thanks to Dr. Baz for the food-grade chemical drum and Mr. Bill for the use of the welder, plasma-cutter, and scrap metal.

Trick-or-Treat - Every Halloween, the local kids would trick-or-treat in the residence halls. Some of the guys got a real kick out of decorating... (The knife and ketchup were smuggled out of the cafeteria.)

Zeke - Yesh! Dat is de one. Do not look at my bottom.

Computing

The "Tower of Power" - I inherited an 8-foot tall steel 19" relay rack that weighed 250 pounds. It adorned my dorm room during my junior year of undergrad. The Tower of Power held a number of projects, including two servers, Radio Free Roberts, and DuddiNet.

DuddiNet - I lived a really old dorm my junior year. We only had 10BaseT Ethernet on mixture of CAT3 (!!) and CAT5 cable. So, we scrounged some end cuts from Communications Services and pulled our own cable to build a 100BaseT network for four rooms. We had the first 802.11b access point on campus, too.

Compaq Thing - This oddity showed up on my repair bench at school. Somebody in Industrial Design really dropped the ball on this one. What a piece!

REU at Minnesota

Playing Ultimate - When we weren't researching, we were playing ultimate. I'm in the orange shirt.

I think it refers to stripping photoresist, but I'm not sure... We thought about making a group t-shirt. I'm glad we didn't...but, it's good website material.
